WORLD SE A POWER
A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of the World's Navies and theirWarships
The Encyclopedia of World Sea Power is the most colourful and one of the most comprehensive popular reference books on modern fighting ships available today. It features most of the world's major naval vessels from the mighty nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the Amazon patrol boats of the Brazilian navy, and includes such diverse types as the terrifying 'Delta' and 'Typhoon' class ballistic missile submarines of the Soviet Navy, the helicopter carrying destroyers of Japan's maritime self-defence force, the minesweepers of the Royal Navy, and the fast attack craft of such nations as Norway and Egypt.
The first part of the volume is arranged in sections, each covering one of the major categories of fighting ship from submarines and aircraft carriers through cruisers, destroyers, and frigates to smaller combatants and support ships. Each section is lavishly illustrated with colour profi les and photographs, and most of the sections feature a large, detailed three-view illustration of one of the major types. The later sections are devoted to naval weapons and weapon systems, which are essential to the operation of modern fighting ships.
The second part The Encyclopedia of World Sea Power presents an easy-to-use alphabetical list of world navies. It gives brief details of their size and the numbers of ships of each type in their inventories, highlighting the differences between the superpowers, the traditional maritime nations and the emerging forces of the developing world.
Sea warfare has been affected by the electronic and computer revolution as much as ariy other field. Ships are designed to cope with the nuclear threat at sea, weapon systems are controlled by computer and aimed by radar, and commanders can communicate with the other side of the world by satellite. The Encyclopedia of World Sea Power allows a fascinating glimpse into the changing and challenging world of the modern fighting sailor. Vissza
