The Encyclopedia of Classical Mi(.s/cattenipb to fill a possible gap in the music-lover's and student's requirements by tackling music from a categorical and technical viewpoint; it is designed to give the reader a practical introduction to music by covering it from all obvious aspects, first explaining its history and growth, then backing this up with selective material on composers, their works, operas, conductors and singers that will help the searcher to find the way in to a balanced appreciation of the whole classical music scene.
The book begins with a substantial section on the orchestra, broken down in to a consideration of symphonies, concertos and some ballet scores. Opera is similarly sub-divided and includes a survey of some of the most popular works and singers. The composer section sums up the importance of national characteristics and is complemented by five attractive maps which indicate the birthplaces of eminent composers. Chamber music is then considered and defined in terms of its most important works and leading protagonists and this section leads on to musical instruments themselves, with a survey on ancient and modern species. Choral music and songare similarly broken down with histories and biographical surveys of, for example, thegreatliedersingersand accompanists. The special world of early music is considered, followed by a brief look at the elements of music and language, with the examination of part of a musical score, Elgar's Cello Concerto, rinally, the private means of listening to and studying music are of great importance today and the book summarises the aid to appreciation that the gramophone has brought to so many people.
Beautifully illustrated and lucidly written. The Encyclopedia of Classical Music will afford the reader an even greater appreciation and understanding of the subject. Its depth, perception, objectivity and lightness of touch will appeal to music-lovers everywhere and make it the essential guide and companion to classical music.
