The river that was named for him and the countryside around it is the gateway to the Empire State of New York, stretching 450 miles from the roaring cataract of Niagara Falls to the pounding surf at Montauk Point. The hand of man has altered some of it, but much of New York's countryside is unchanged since the day Henry Hudson sailed up his river. It has the largest protected wilderness of any state except Alaska, thousands of lakes and mile after mile of rivers and streams. It has great modem cities and small towns unchanged since the nineteenth century.
