THE EGYPTIAN GODS
'This Httle book is intended as a guide for all who are interested in the ancient Egyptian religion. The gods figure so largely upon Egyptiiin monuments that the study of them may truthfully be said to occupy at least one half of Egyptology. But unfortunately these deities are so numerous, their relations with each other so complicated, arid their external forms so confusing that the layman is often bewildered and discouraged.
The present work, therefore, aims at providing the traveller in Egypt, or the visitor to Egyptian collections in museums, with a handbook in which he may find the most important facts concerning the Egyptian gods and the beliefs which surrounded them, presented as straightforwardly as possible. In endeavouring to do this the Author has obeyed the principle that the actual writings of the Egyptians themselves deserve premier consideration, and he has therefore given copious quotations from Egyptian religious texts, these quotations being printed in italics so that they may be easily consulted. It should also be pointed out that the book, as its title indicates, confines itself, as far as possible, to a consideration of the gods alone, and only briefly refers to other phenomena of religion in Egypt. Further, a Descriptive List of the Principal Egyptian Gods, in alphabetical order, has been added at the end of the book, which should enable the reader to recognize a good many upon the monuments for himself.'
