Fülszöveg

The Egg ond I is the famous story of Betty MacDonald's life on a chicken ranch in the North Pacific coast country of California. The scenery is beautiful and dramatic, and food is plentiful (far too plentiful!), but the primitive living conditions, the harsh uncultivated land, the odd neighbours, and the cossetted chickens were defínite drawbacks in the eyes of the city girl. Much of her time was spent hewing wood and drawing water, but in spite of these menial tasks and the many irritations and disappointments, all that is most humorous in the many uncomfortable incidents is related so as to take the sting out of them. The neighbours especially are most interesting - the prolific and borrowing ones, the prim and 'surburban' ones, as wel! as the gipsy with grand ideas, the feckless Indians, and many other 'characters'; she describes them all with wit, irony, and at the same time sympathy. This book is rattlingly well-written, brims with Types, and is very funny. I recommend it to... Tovább
