The Early Diary finds Anais Nin in her mid-twenties, relishing friendships and flirtations, in love with Spanish dance, discovering Proust, Colette and Freud and writing with incandescent energy and brio. In these years 1927—31 she completed her first published book, a study of D. H. Lawrence, and began to raid her diary as a sourcebook for early experiments in fiction.
The diary was also her confidant and confessional, and these pages detail a period of ardent physical and emotional awakening, her romantic obsession with the American writer John Erskine which threatened her marriage to Hugh
