The Dancing Man
Joseph was an orphan who lived in a poor village by the Baltic Sea. Life was hard and dreary there; no one laughed or danced. But Joseph could see that the world laughed and danced all around him, and he longed to move and sway and dance with it.
One evening, a mysterious old man appeared before Joseph on the shore. He wore a long red coat, a tall green hat, and a pair of silver shoes. The old man began to dance. One slow step, one quick step, a glide, a dip Joseph saw that the old man was dancing the waves.
The man swept off his hat and bowed. "I'm the Dancing Man," he said, "and I have a gift for you." He gave Joseph the silver shoes, then disappeared. And with the old man's shoes, Joseph set out to dance with the world.

Other Clarion Books by Ruth Bornstein
THE DREAM OF THE LITTLE ELEPHANT
" A tiny elephant the color of new grass and no bigger than a mouse is prone to agree with the big, gray elephants' assessment that he certainly doesn't belong in their land. But where does he belong? In the new land of which he dreams? After further searching the dream symbols materialize, and he's welcomed by a herd of others like himself " —ALA, Booklist, 6/77
"The lullabylike quality of Bornstein's story and pictures all but pleads for the book to be read at bedtime. There isn't a jarring note from first to last in this quietly enticing adventure."
—Publishers Weekly, 4177
LITTLE GORILLA
"This is a story of love and security. The brief text and large, clear illustrations make it especially appropriate for sharing with very young children—a good choice for bedtime."
—Wilson Library Bulletin, 9/76
