"My new life began when my cousin Adam Keelby came into the Salisbury one muggy September evening." Frank Batcombe, an ambitious reporter on a Fleet Street daily, has not seen Adam since they both left Yorkshire some five years ago; but Adam, now in PR, quickly reasserts his old dominance, and at one of his famous parties a few days later easily persuades Frank to come and share his Hampstead flat. Frank is deeply involved in a campaign his paper is waging. If they can link in the public mind the names of a cabinet minister famed for moral rectitude and a well-known woman novelist, then the paper will upset the balance of the government, and Frank himself will gain advancement. But Theresa, who expects to marry Frank, hotly disapproves. And she instinctively distrusts Adam's influence. To Adam everything is really a game. His rule for his parties, for instance, is to invite no-one over 35 who is not rich or famous. At them Frank meets a string of celebrated and influential people-politicians like Lord Mislingford and David Glenthorn, who is particularly close to the Prime Minister; novelists like Judy Aviemore; journalists, photographers and film people. And of course there are always plenty of attractive and vivacious girls; among them is Angela Guilsfield, a painter, whose stormy and passionate affair with Frank changes his whole outlook. But nothing ever changes for Adam. "Down with Oxfam!" he still cries, just for the hell of stirring things up. Frank, on the other hand, begins to see that Adam does not mind whom he uses, or whose reputation he may break. THE CRYING GAME has the exuberant spirits of the young, ambitious and fashionable in the whirl of intrigue and political scandal; but John Braine also conveys the deeper sense of what is left after the game is over, when, as the song has it, "Before you know where you are you're saying goodbye". He has created a large and colourful cast of characters, and portrays them with liveliness, warmth and great narrative force. Vissza
