Today, one will encounter a wide variety of rheological equations of state in papers on theoretical rock mechanics. The purpose of the present authors was to choose for a description of rock properties a rheological model that will account for a majority of salient rock features, in a mathematical form simple enough to be amenable to handling, and to the solution of the basic problems of rock mechanics, using mathematical tools commonly available. The subject matter of the book has been divided into two major parts. The first part includes definitions of fundamental concepts and all the relationships and fundamental equations sufficient for the theoretical solution of a fairly wide variety of problems. Relationships linking mechanical variables are presented, and so is the physical meaning of the material (physical) equation. The second part includes definitions of phenomena connected with the excavation of cavities, the concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary fields. Theoretical tools are applied to the specification of stress, deformation and displacement fields and their changes about drifts of circular cross-section; problems of interaction between rock and supports are considered, and conclusions are drawn as to the optimál choice of supports, the correct technology of their installation, and the life expectancy of mining cavities.
