For a long time, the postwar EngHsh novel has been associated with 'realism' and 'anger'. It has been viewed as a fiction out of touch with contemporary developments in the novel in other countries. But the English novel has changed radically during the 1960s and 1970s, though little has been written about the shift in manner and mood. This volume emphasizes the recent achievements of the contemporary EngHsh novel: its technical experiments, its relation to modern fiction in other countries, and its distinctive attempts to preserve a measure of realism in a more experimental climate.
Writers considered include John Fowles, Muriel Spark, Iris Murdoch, Doris Lessing, B. S. Johnson, Alan Burns, Angus Wilson, Anthony Burgess, Beryl Bainbridge, David Caute, Margaret Drabble and J. G. Farrell.
