July 4, 1976, marked the two-hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. It was a date anticipated by millions of published words; by production of innumerable souvenir collectibles; by television productions; and by local plans of celebration throughout the country. In fact, July 4 is celebrated as Independence Day each and every year, and ranks with Christmas and Easter as the most readily identifiable holidays our nation has. Has anyone celebrated March 4? Not recently. Not in living memory. Yet March 4, 1789, is a date of equal importance to our nation as July 4, 1776. A tating victory was won on this date. A victory of intellect.
