One notable feature of the Scots language is its predominantly oral tradition and the resulting lack of any standard spelling scheme. The Concise Scots Dictonary overcomes this difficulty through the inclusion of large numbers of spelling variants, thus greatly increasing the chances of finding the meaning of a particular word, no matter how it is spelt. Whether ewe or jow has been given for fir-cone, for example, it will still be easily traced.
