The seventh edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary is an updating of this famous work, and includes many accessions to the language (such as ayatollah, cruise missile, microchip, and word processor) that have come into prominence in the six years since the publication of the radically revised sixth edition, on which it is based. It contains entries for over 40,000 headwords, with a totál of somé 75,000 vocabulary items including derivatives, compounds, and abbreviations.
The editor has continued to draw on the material assembled for the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary, now approaching completion, and has taken account of the large number of suggestions for addition and improvement that have come to his attention since the sixth edition was published. In response to frequent requests from those who are concerned about standards of English that guidance be given on matters of disputed and controversial usage, special markings (D for disputed uses and R for racially offensive uses) are introduced for the first time.
The result is a dictionary that continues to justify its reputation as the most reliable authority on the spoken and written English of today. Vissza
