Little or nothing is known of Shakespeare's earlier years and young manhood, but tradition has it that he spent some years as a schoolmaster. He is thought to have begun writing for the stage in the late 1580s. The order of appearance of his plays is not known, but the trilogy of Henry VI, and Richard III were probably among the first to be performed. By the end of the century the body of work included Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Thé Merry Wives of Windsor, As You hike It and Twelfth Night, plus the narrative poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece.
Shakespeare maintained this remarkable rate of production until a few years before his death in 1616. These years, which saw the creation of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra and Macbeth, must surely have been the greatest days the theatre has ever known:
Seven years after Shakespeare's death his friends and fellow actors John Heminge and Henry Cordell published the first edition of his plays. The 'First Folio' provides a complete and reliable guide to Shakespeare's work and the very fact of its publication in 1623 indicates the esteem in which he was held at the time of his death.
The present Volume contains not only the complete plays, but also Shakespeare's narrative poems and sonnets.
