Tombs and Treasures of Egypt's Greatest Pharaohs Nicholas Reeves and Richard H. Wilkinson
This timely book will be recognized as the definitive account of the Valley of the Kings, visited by millions of tourists and famous throughout the world as the burial place of the great New Kingdom pharaohs.
Some 80 tombs were dug in the valley at the height of Egyptian power, more ±an 3,000 years ago, their chambers stocked with inaedible treasures and decorated with magnificent wall paintings. It was here, in 1922, that Howard Carter stumbled upon the virtually intact tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. Recently the valley has made international headlines with the discovery of the burial chapels of Ramesses the Great's many sons; The Complete Valley of the Kings is the first book to publish an account of these remarkable findings.
Reeves and Wilkinson, both acknowledged authorities on the valley, bring together the art, archaeology, and history in one exciting account
'Preparations for the Afterlife' looks at the topography of the valley, why specific tomb sites were chosen, the makeup of the workforce and how the royal monuments were planned, decorated and prepared for the king's afterlife.
'Agents of Discovery' tells the story of the chroniclers and archaeologists, from Greek and Roman times to Howard Carter and Tutankhamun.
'Tombs of the Kings' is a unique catalogue of all the valley's burials, describing for each its discovery, architecture, decoration and contents.
Three final sections examine the robbing of the valley in antiquity, the extraordinary hiding away of the royal mummies in two separate burial caches, and the urgent steps now needed to safeguard the royal necropolis for future generations.
The format of the book follows the style of Nicholas Reeves' international bestseller, The Complete Tutankhamun (Thames & Hudson 1990), creating both an essential sourcebook and an entertaining guide for tourists, scholars, students and all armchair travellers.
