Authoritatively prepared, the text of this edition of the complete English poems of John Donne is based primarily on the early printed editions (1633 ff.) and amended as required by the evidence of the numerous reported manuscripts. The detailed notes explain unfamiliar words, clarify obscure references, and refine grammatical complexities; they also give the most important variant readings from select manuscripts. Scrupulously avoided are all paraphrases, personal interpretations, and unauthorized
textual emendations. Professor Patrides begins with a comprehensive and stimulating introduction, and has also provided the reader with a wide-ranging bibliography of over 750 items.
