Another important feature of this volume is the clear exposition of developments which provided the impetus for the emergence ofthe functional-notional syllabus. Several types of communicative syllabus have evolved since the early 70's; these are discussed and further directions for the creation of other syllabus types are suggested. The author is always careful to point out that the chief aim of a language teaching program must be proficiency for the learner, and that any syllabus shouid serve this end rather than be an end in itself.
