Drama!Italian Literature
For the first time, Machiavelli's three comedies are available in a faithful new translation that captures the true flavor of the original. Primarily known as a political essayist and author of The Prince, Machiavelli also wrote three comedies, one of which, The Mandrake, is widely considered to be one of the greatest of modern Italian comedies and a major influence on the dramatic careers of Goldoni and Pirandello. A substantive historical and analytical introduction provides the reader with an appréciation of Machiavelli as a major dramatic writer, pointing up the historical and intellectual background from which his writing emerged and discussing varied critical interprétations of the plays.
