Political, economic and ideological developments are treated in relation to the basic historical trends, and the participation of the people themselves in the making of history is brought forward. Convinced of the validity of the Marxist outlook, the author sees class struggle —within the colonies and integral to the colonial relationship with Britain—as the central dynamic of the period. The volume, complete and independent in itself, is the first in A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE in which the author proposes to re-examine the entire course of United States development from the viewpoint of historical materialism.
