John Freeman
The Coasts of Britain is a rich and colourful exploration of this island's extensive shoreline. A different aspect of coastal life forms the focus of each of five chapters, aspects that combine to provide Britain's reputation as a maritime nation. Its physical, holiday, industrial, architectural and fishing coasts are all portrayed by the author's stunning colour photographs, accompanied by informative text.

Few countries as small as Britain have such a varied coastline. Its physical features are constantly changing, pretty coves contrast with bleak shingle beaches, sandy bays and craggy cliffs. Much coastal architecture and local industry can be traced back over several hundred years, although economic and technological changes have radically altered the industrial shoreline. Fishing, one of Britain's oldest industries, has also become a mixture of traditional and modern techniques.

The advent of the railway in the last century provided access to the coast and seaside holidays have gained in popularity ever since. This book makes us graphically aware of all these features and their contribution to the fascination of Britain's coasts.
For every copy of this book sold W H Smith & Son Ltd will donate L0.50 to Enterprise Neptune in support of the effort to save our unspoilt coastline for future generations. Vissza
