The Cleveland Museum of Art situated in a handsome park at University Circle, is a priváté corporation not for profit, operated wholly for public benefit. Originating in priváté philanthropic thought in 1882, the Museum did not come into physical being until 1916 when the originál, classical-style building, designed by Hubbell and Benes, was opened to the public-"a building devoted to Art and establishing therein a Museum and Gallery of Art. . .for the benefit of all the people forever." This institution is a generál art museum dedicated to the best visual arts produced by man at any place, at any time. The catholic nature of the collections is suggested by the works included in this book: painting, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles, and prints and drawings-from the ancient world, from the Orient, from Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. That portion of our collections illustrated in this book is necessarily limited in number-only forty-nine of the thousands of works contained in more than fifty galleries-but we hope it will encourage more people to come and see these and other works in the originál.
