It owes its name to the fact that, in Roman times, there was once a temple dedicated to Venus on the promontory on which part of the village stands today.

corniglia
It stands on a high rocky spur, that dominates the sea from a height of over 100 metres. The very beautiful beach is popular and friendly. Excellent wine is produced here and there are splendid walks to be enjoyed along the paths of the Route of Sanctuaries.
Riomaggiore
Two simple rows of houses, juxtaposed almost to form two different levels of the village, stretch out on the two sides of the river that gives it its name, but which in the centre of the village has been covered.
