Publisher's Remarks
Located on the northernmost tip of the Adriatic sea, surrounded by three quarters by Carso, its only natural hinterland^ Trieste was to become the port of the largest European Empire in the XVIIIth century. Few other cities have had the privilege to experience such an unusual phase which swept away all the medieval structures then characterizing the small Adriatic towns. The best architects did their utmost to embellish the new town which attracted traders and labourers from all over Europe, thanks to the establishment of the free-port area. Trieste soon became a meeting-point of different interests and cultures from which it acquired its unique cosmopolitan culture Most of the charm of this city lies in this history, in this 'adventure' which is still recalled by its buildings, roads, squares, monuments and museums. Hence, 'The Charm of Trieste' is a book speaking through images in order to let the reader discover the history and the feeling of this city through its most distinguished architectonic features, past and present-144 pages, 190 unedited reproductions with the comments of one of the best qualified experts of the local artistic history are addressed to anyone wishing to know the city of Trieste a little more intimately.
