After twenty-eight years at IBM, Thomas R. Horton became Chief Executive Officer of the American Management Association in 1982. From this extraordinary vantage point he was able to observe hundreds of CEOs succeed and fail as they struggled with the privilege and accountability of leadership. Dr. Horton is author of "What Works for Me": 16 CEOs Talk About Their Careers and Commitments (AMACOM Books) and co-author, with Peter C. Reid, of Beyond the Trust Gap: Forging a New Partnership Between Managers and Their Employers. In 1992 he retired as AMA Chairman. A native Floridian and former teacher, he now lives in DeLand, Florida, and serves as Advisor to Stetson University.
