The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English provides a new illustrated reference to world literature in English. In a single volume, it gives up-to-date, authoritative entries on British, Irish, African, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Indián and Caribbean literatures in English.
Under the editorship of Ian Ousby and with contributions from over a hundred specialists, the Guide contains detailed, reliable biographical and critical articles on major poets, playwrights, novelists, critics, journalists and essayists first published in English — from the established literary giants such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Whitman and Henry James to significant contemporaries such as Seamus Heaney, Sam Shepard, Patrick White, Wole Soyinka and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. There is alsó substantial coverage of authors who have written primarily for children, such as Eleanor Farjeon and Roald Dahl.
Major works and literary journals receive separate treatment in entries from Middlemarch to Moby-Dick, Blackwood's Magaziné to The New Yorker, Sidney's Apology for Poetry toThoreau's Walden.
Longer essays give broader coverage of topics like science fiction, Romanticism, children's literature, detective fiction, libraries, the Bible in English and the rise of the English newspaper. There are useful explanations of genres, literary movements, critical terms and figures of speech. Entries on modernism, structuralism, irony, tragedy etc. elucidate difficult concepts.
The volume is organized alphabetically, with cross-references inviting the reader to pursue an author or topic from one entry to another. The entries are illustrated with over 300 drawings and photographs.
Of all languages, English has produced the richest written culture. The Guide is a definitive and up-to-date reference to the vast heritage of world literature in English.
