THE
BRITISH ISLES
A Symphony in Colour
No comer of the world could be richer in natural beauty than the ever-varying tapestry of rivers and hills, woôdlands and pastures, marshes and coasts, that forms the British Isles. The infinite variety of Britain's scenery has been attributed to the influence of underlying rocks which vary in age from some of the oldest formations in the world, in the barren wilderness of West Sutherland, to the new land masses stiU in the process of formation, on the shifting south-eastern coastline of Dungeness. THE
BRITISH ISLES
A Symphony in Colour
No comer of the world could be richer in natural beauty than the ever-varying tapestry of rivers and hills, woôdlands and pastures, marshes and coasts, that forms the British Isles. The infinite variety of Britain's scenery has been attributed to the influence of underlying rocks which vary in age from some of the oldest formations in the world, in the barren wilderness of West Sutherland, to the new land masses stiU in the process of formation, on the shifting south-eastern coastline of Dungeness. Yet perhaps it is also due to a special and highly individualistic magic, effected by the play of light and shade and the interchanging intervals of sim and showers, that fall upon the patchwork landscape of Britain and make of it the perfect setting for whatever building history and time have chosen to leave imprinted there.
The forbidding fortress and the thatched cottage festooned with flowers, the soaring spire of a venerable cathedral and the familiar steeple of a village church, the ancient monument and the vital product of modem engineering, the vast metropolis and the isolated hamlet all these and more are to be found in Britain and all have found their way into a scene which is mysteriously appropriate in both mood and colour.
This book with its superb photographs has captured the mystery which has given these isles an importance and a beauty which is out of all proportion to their size. It has pinpointed in magnificent colour the charm which has attracted so many visitors to these shores — a charm which defies all definition but one which remains uniquely British.
