THE BORZOI
COLLEGE READER
Edited by Charles Muscatine and
Marlene Griffith
Intelligent writing, according to Charles
Muscatine and Marlene Griffith, devel-
ops out of the kind of reading that leads
to a personal testing of ideas and, thus,
to a discovery of what one really believes.
To stimulate this form of active thought,
the editors have grouped these readings
from important areas of intellectual, so-
cial, and moral concern by subject mat-
ter. The highly discriminating quality of
the selections is evident not only in the
fusion of both traditional and contem-
porary writers—such as de Quincey and
Susanne Langer on the function of art or
Plato and Martin Luther King on civil
disobedience—but also in the juxtaposing
of essays representing arguments which
are often in direct conflict with one
another. Being exposed to divergent
views, the reader is discouraged from
the passive acceptance of received ideas
and is, rather, provoked into critical
thinking.... Tovább

of essays representing arguments which
are often in direct conflict with one

views, the reader is discouraged from
the passive acceptance of received ideas
and is, rather, provoked into critical
thinking. The varied structure and style
of these essays also demonstrate to the
reader the diverse means of treating simi-
lar themes and allow for study by genre
and rhetorical device as well.
THE BORZOI COLLEGE READER
continues the tradition whose underlying
philosophy asserts that critical thinking,
reading, and writing are closely inter-
woven and that all three depend on an
active and probing sensibility.

RHETORICAL GUIDE TO THE BORZOI COLLEGE READER
by Richard L. Larson A detailed analysis of the principal rhetorical strat-
egies, expository techniques, and tone of each essay, with questions for
discussion and writing assignments. "Not only are there ext?asive analyses
of all the essays . . : and a highly detailed series of cross-references to the
commentaries, but Mr. Larson is really getting at the rhetoric of the essays
he examines. Teachers are going to be shamelessly cribbing their lectures
from Larson's Guide for years to come."—Edward P. J. Corbett, Director
of Freshman Composition, U. of Illinois, Urbana
TEACHER S GUIDE TO THE BORZOI COLLEGE READER
by Charles Muscatine and Marlene Griffith An analysis of each selection
by subject matter along with topics for study and research, a table of cross-
references of related topics in different sections, and an index to the selec-
tions by rhetorical type.
The Rhetorical Guide and the Teachers Guide are for use with both
shorter and larger editions and are available to teachers upon request.
SHORTER PAPERBACK EDITION—THE BORZOI COLLEGE
READER / Edited by Charles Muscatine and Marlene Griffith For
those who prefer a shorter book. It's about half of the original anthology, but
the design is the same: to teach the art of critical thinking and intelligent
writing. Included are the most cogent statements of traditional and con-
temporary writers on eight relevant, provocative topics. The varied struc-
ture and style of these essays demonstrate diverse ways of treating similar
themes and allow for rhetorical study as well.
WRITING BY PATTERNS: FORM B
by Helen E. Lefevre and Carl A. Lefevre A sequel to the widely-tested
composition text. Different exercises combined with the original text make
effective use of the latest developments in linguistics. Vissza
