The Documents of 20th-Century Art
General Editor: Robert Motherwell. Documentary Editor: Bernard Karpel, Chief Librarian, Museum of Modem Art, New York.
The history of art since Delacroix's time has run a complex and often confusing course. Too often we rely on the interprétations of critics and historians, rather than the statements of artists themselves, for an understanding of international styles and movements as well as in-dividual works of art.
Many twentieth-century artists have been moved to expand, explain, and even defend their art in writing, resulting in an abundance of rich and exciting literature. 'The Documents of 20th-Century Art" makes avail-able the most significant and revealing writings of the artists of our time. many of which have never before been published in English. Each book contains commentaries, a bibliography and a chronology, prepared by Bernard Karpel: many of the illustrations are rare photographs.

About this book
Originally published in Munich in 1912, this provocative anthology is now one of the most crucially important works of literature on the art theory and culture of this Century. The collection of essays by leading artists and musicians of the day, together with reproductions of many kinds of art, was edited by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc in an attempt to make modem artistic currents accessible to the European avant-garde; it gave a common spiritual basis to the Blaue Reiter search for a total synthesis of international culture. Now available in English for the first time, the complété almanac is presented here in an édition simulating the original format. Ail the illustrations and documentary apparatus from the first édition, as well as correspondence between the editors, first drafts of préfacés, and musical examples are included; in addition, factual errors have been corrected and footnotes provided for scholarly sources. Fully preserved in their original sequence are the articles by Marc, Schönberg, Delaunay and others of the Blaue Reiter group, an original play by Kandinsky, with his famous essay 'On the Problem of Form', and over 150 reproductions from the editors' choice of ancient, primitive and contemporary art.
