A majorcity supplied entirely by air for over a year.
That was the unique, historic achievement of the airlift that broke the Berh'n Blockade.
Everything, not just food but coal, petrol, the whole staggering range and weight of supplies forwell over 2 million people, had to be flown in.
Day in, day out, month after month, the transport planes, British and American, military and civil, flew in. A flight every ninety seconds was the average. Turn round time came down to six minutes. The strain on aircraft, crew and organisation was almost unbearable at times. But it was done.
Berlin, still largely war-ruined, its people, cold, underfed and apprehensive, was saved. The Russians accepted defeat. The blockade was lifted.
A political turning point and a milestone in the history of flying, the Berlin Blockade is also a fascinating story.
