'Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder', so it is as well that the 32 colour pictures in this book make no impossible claim to be representative. As George Scott-Moncrieff points out in his Introduction, "Mr. Hab-good has gone his own way and taken his pick, expressing primarily his own taste in scenery: and I think he has presented an exiting visual introduction to our land sorry as I am at the loss of some favourite aspects of our scenery, the loss is more than compensated for by the remarkable quality of Mr. Habgood's work in recapturing his own chosen subjects."

It must not be thought, however, that the choice of pictures is capricious. This could hardly be when the subjects include cities or towns such as Edinburgh, Dumfries and Culross; castles and houses like Eilean Donan and Traquair; Stonehaven, Grail, Crinan and MacdufFamongst fishing ports; Lomond, Lirmhe, Rannoch, Laggan and Maree among the lochs; and, besides, scenes in the Lowlands, on Skye, and in the hills and motmtains of Peebleshire, Midlothian and of course the Highlands itself. — A personal selection of subjects, maybe, but a far from un-representative one after all.
It is notable how often, in the accompanying text, George Scott-Moncrieff remarks that he has himself lived for a time in the area he is discussing. Perhaps that is why he writes with an air at once so personal and so authoritative.
