The Australians: a people come of age. Shrugging off our rough and rural childhood, coming to terms with our pleasure-loving urban adolescence, we face the challenge of maturity.
Rodney Hall in a personal and evocative text sifts through the elements that have shaped us. His text is accompanied by 280 outstanding pictures taken by some of the best photographers in Australia today.
The photographs focus on the landscapes in which we live: the urban setting with its complexities of peoples, its business and its pleasures; the outback with its silent distances, rugged individualists and astonishing wealth. Here too are the newsmakers and the news events, the shared griefs and joys, the legacies of the past and the realities of the present.
This is the new Australia — a brilliant glimpse of what lies ahead.

This is the new Australia — a brilliant glimpse of what lies ahead.
Rodney Hall's career as a writer, musician and radio actor spans more than two decades. His most recent achievement has been winning the Miles Franklin Award for his novel Just Relations. He has also published three novels, two biographies, anthologies and many volumes of poetry. In 1968 he became the first writer to be awarded a Creative Arts Fellowship at the Australian National University.
He was educated at Brisbane Boys' College and later at the University of Queensland. After leaving school at the age of sixteen, he joined the Brisbane Bushwalkers Club and explored much of south-east Queensland as well as making a journey with them to Central Australia. This began a lifelong addiction to travel.
He lives with his wife and three daughters on the far south coast of New South Wales, looking out across the Pacific, just a little north of Eden. Vissza
