Compiled under the expert guidance of the world's foremost zoological authorities; backed by the most up to date knowledge from the world's leading zoos and research institutions; The Atlas of World Wildlife presents to the reader the fascinating array of living creatures which, in their natural habitats and relationships, make up the ecology of our planet.
More than an atlas, more than a beautiful book of animals, The Atlas of World Wildlife is, in
over 200 pages of maps, photographs and paintings, the book of the totál environment - of habitat - and of the complex relationships under which life exists on earth.
Our planet is the home of a stunning variety of wildlife - beautiful and grotesque, harmless and dangerous, awe-inspiring and comic - but none can be understood, nor its shape, colouring or behaviour fully appreciated, in isolation. Each is inextricably involved with its neighbours, whether it be hunter or hunted, parasite or host, tree living, burrowing, flying or running, daylight browser or nocturnal predator. Each is the result of millions of years of evolution, each generation becoming better fitted for one particular niche in the environment.
This atlas is not simply concerned with the location and distribution of animal life. Relationships are all important and it is in the complex relationships of animals, vegetation, terrain and climate that we see the true workings of the evolutionary process - those processes which, over the past 750 millión years, have produced the wonder and fascination of Earth's present day ecology.
"A rare combination of scholarship and artistic presentation that will bring useful learning and sheer delight into every home."
Thor Heyerdahl
