THE ASCENT OF
WONDER:
THE EVOLUTION 0Y= h
The Ascent of Wonder: The Evolution of Hard Science Fiction is a groundbreaking collection of SF's finest works, selected by two of the field's most respected anthologists from the genre's visionary core—the pure form known as "hard SF" that has always been the field's cutting edge. In The Ascent of Wonder, David C. Hartwell, editor of the critically acclaimed. World Fantasy Award-winning The Dark Descent: The Evolution of Horror, which redefined the literature of terror, joins with noted anthologist Kathryn Cramer to craft an equally ambitious exploration of this challenging and controversial literary form. The volume contains more than sixty exciting, insightful works of short science fiction by many of the field's best-known writers, as well as insightful interpretive essays by the editors and by author and scientist Gregory Benford.
The Ascent of Wonder is not only a definitive collection of many of science fiction's landmark works, it also provides a brilliant critical analysis of the origins and meaning of this popular literary form. "Hard SF is about the beauty of truth," writes David Hartwell in his Introduction. "It is a symbolic representation of the wonder at the perception of truth that is experienced at the moment of scientific discovery." The stories in the collection explore that theme—the lively dialogue between unbridled imagination and hard scientific reality that has produced the field's most influential and memorable works. The authors represented range from the genre's earliest pioneers, such as Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and H. G. Wells, and its modern masters, including Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein, to its most visionary innovators, including J.G. Ballard, Alfred Bester, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Le Cuin, and Gene Wolfe, and its most outstanding younger talents, including Greg Bear, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and Vernor VInge.
David G. Hartwell is one of science fiction's most experienced and influential editors. As an editor with Berkley Books, Pocket Books, and William Morrow, Hartwell has worked with many of the field's most respected authors, and edited numerous award-winning works. Nominated seven times for the field's Hugo Award, he Is the author of Age of Wonders, a nonf iction study of the science fiction field, and an award-winning anthologist with many major volumes to his credit, including the bestselling World Treasury of Science Fiction. E. F. Blieler, author of The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, called Hartwell's The Dark Descent "an outstanding anthology," writing "Included is excellent work by most of the major writers in supernatural fiction. This book can offer many hours of enjoyment." Hartwell holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Columbia University. He lives in Pleasantville, New York.
Kathryn Cramer co-edited the World Fantasy Award-winning anthology The Architecture of Fear, and was the editor of its widely praised sequel Walls of Fear. With David Hartwell and Peter C. Pautz, Cramer developed the critical analysis of the literature of horror which formed the thematic structure for The Dark Descent. She has edited and co-edited several other anthologies including Christmas Ghosts and Spirits of Christmas. Cramer lives in Pleasantville, New York. Vissza
