As a ruggedly individuahstic schoolboy, he successfully stymied a series of schools in attempts to teach him the classics, but committed to memory a complete dictionary of quotations when such knowledge later seemed expedient. As a youthful army officer and foreign correspondent, he looked over the comic-opera Cuban Revolution of 1895; in India he played top-flight polo, and evidenced military prowess and further writing talents, carrying these latter activities on to greater glory in the Egyptian Sudan. In the South African Boer War his colorful prisoner-of-war escape from the enemy capital made world-wide news. In World War I he headed the British admiralty as First Lord, then served for a time in France as an unorthodox colonel commanding the 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers.
The political history of the Prime Minister is, of course, at the heart of this book, but Churchill's approach to politics is as unusual as it is engrossing.
