This panoramic volume, with a fascinating introduction by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., traces the entire story of the American experience, from the first settlers who arrived in the New World to the latest policy statement from the White House.
The book is divided into five sections, each introduced with an essay by a prominent American historian.
"Founding a Nation" begins the book with the first voyage of the Vikings to the New World and covers the colonial and revolutionary periods.
The second section, "Testing a Union," covers the War of 1812, the movement West, the terrible strife over slavery and the resulting War Between the States.
"Forging a Nation" recounts the story of the political and social problems after the Civil War, goes on through the Industrial Revolution and the Spanish-American War, and ends at the close of the nineteenth century.

"Expanding Resources," the penultimate section, tells of the glories and agonies of the first forty-five years of the twentieth century in the United States, beginning with the swearing-in of Theodore Roosevelt, through World War I, the prosperity of the 1920s, the trials of the Great Depression, and World War II.
"Emerging as a World Power" describes the social revolutions and international complications inherent in America's position as a superpower and the struggles of the nation from 1944 to the present.

Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. is one of the most distinguished historians in the United States. He is the author of more than a dozen books and the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes.
