ACROPOLIS REFERENCE MEMORANDA
The archaeological student or ordinary visitor to the Acropolis of
Athens who plans to use the perspective reconstruction and the plan
that compose this map - guide of the Acropolis, must have an idea
of the method adopted in the layout, drawing and documentation of
this work.
The representation of both perspective reconstruction and plan of
the Acropolis of Athens has been based exclusively on firm
archaeological facts and data that have appeared up to 1983
(see table on the map). Nothing was quoted without documentary
evidence. Furthermore, information contained in ancient literary sources has been included in the commentary.
The works of restoration carried out by the Greek Archaeological
Society have been of very little assistance in the drafting of this work,
except for the reconstructed representation of the area of the
Propylaea.
In order to maintain the present aspect of the Acropolis, we have included the tower said Belvedere, on the N.E. corner, where the pole of
the Greek flag is now standing, as well as the present appearance of
the fortification walls all along the southern side, preserving the later
supporting buttresses.
Generally speaking, we tried to restitute the Acropolis' contemporaty aspect for the easier orientation of visitors.
The above - mentioned inclusion of later structures in a perspective
representation of the mid -3rd century A.D. does not, in our opinion, affect the general appearance of the plan. In designing the map great
care gas been taken to disguise the difference in construction of the
later walls excepting only the supporting butresses.
