Villar Perosa, located at the feet of the Alps just north of Turin, dates back to the early 1700s, when it was first conceived as a royal hunting lodge; within a century, it came under the ownership of the j^nelli family Since that time, succeeding generations of Agnelli matriarchs have shaped the surrounding grounds, marking them with their own distinctive personality Most notable has been Marella Agnelli, who, since her marriage in 1953 to Giovanni Agnelli, has dedicated herself to transforming the gardens. Her decision in 1955 to commission famed English landscape and garden designer Russell Page in this enterprise has resulted in the showcase gardens that today comprise Villar Perosa.
Together, garden designer and patron revamped the grounds, in the process opening up the garden and bringing in the surrounding mountains and sky Their undisputed masterpiece was the creation of the Lake Valley—a succession of 11 artificial lakes and spectacular plantings that wend their way through pan of the property. Page, whose main work at Villar Perosa was concentrated during the years 1955 to 1960, was nonetheless involved with the garden over the course of three decades. At one point, the great designer referred to Villar Perosa as "his Shangri-la."
The Agnelli Gardens atVtllarPerosah an in-depth look at this stupendous villa and surrounding gardens. In addition to die remarkable lake gardens, die munificent grounds include Italian Gardens, a M^nolia Terrace, Lemon Conservatory, Cherry Tree Allée, Foliage Garden, and a swimming pool area designed by architect Gae Aulenti and Marella -^nelli. The achievements are truly dazzling.
The book opens with an absorbing portrait of the Agnelli family at Villar Perosa over some nearly two hundred years by Marella Agnelli and her niece, Marella Caracciolo. This sensitive and personal description of one of Italy's most celebrated families begins readers on an insider's tour of the home and gardens. There follows photo after beautiful photo of the gardens, seen in their seasonal splendor, annotated with commentaries about the various plantings.
