Written when Thomas Paine was in his fifty-seventh year, The
Age of Reason represented the results of years of study and reflec-
tion by its author on the place of religion in society.
Paine was never an atheist, the opinion of many of his peers to
the contrary. Together with many of the foremost liberals and
intellectuals in America and Europe, he believed in Deism. After
seeing the application of the light of rationalism in the political
revolutions in America and France, it seemed to him that the next
step was to apply this same rationalism to religion.
Paine wrote: uOf all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny
in religion is the worst; every other species of tyranny is limited
to the world we live in; but this attempts to stride beyond the
grave, and seeks to pursue us into eternity."
The cool rationale of Paine's The Age of Reason influenced
religious thinking throughout the world; and its pervasive influ-
ence continues to the present day.
