The Poetics and Linguistics Association celebrated its 21®' reunion, its coming of age, in Budapest in April 2001. More than half of the presenters submitted the typed versions of their paper, and so, hopefully, what is included in this Proceedings reflects the state of play.
. Joining the well-known founders dedicated young people also appeared and presented strong, inspired work. There seems to be great interest in reading and readers: the process of discovering strands of meaning in the text ani^ the identity of the person involved in the construction/negotiation of sense and self. The fact that literary linguistics has gained new impetus from cognitive linguistics has made its mark on the conference. Currenriy, as witnessed by the great number of related presentations, both sides of the Cartesian dualism, cognition and emotion attract the attention of stylisticians. Humour and narrative figure largely, and as expected, secrets are revealed by thorough and perceptive texmal analyses and their application in language and literature teaching. As you can see from the contents, we placed the plenaries first, and, wherever possible, tried to keep the sessions, the main areas of research and discussion together in the order they were presented. Thus we haye the following groupings: plenaries, humour, miscellaneous, cognitive linguistics, reading and readers, translation, poetry, prose narrative, and teaching.
This brief introduction could not attempt to comment on all the richness and variety of the papers. We hope that the contributions themselves will manage to conjure up the spirit and quality of the conference. With due thanks to all the contributors we wish you good reading. Vissza
