Few today could disagree with Sam
Houston's enthusiasm for this huge,
diverse state. Probably first sighted by
a European, Amerigo Vespucci, as long
ago as 1497, Texas has benefitted from
the influences of many nations. France
spurred Spain on to colonize when, in
1685, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de
La Salle, landed near Matagorda Bay,
and Southern settlers, freed slaves,
Mexicans and Indians have all played a
part in creating the culture of the state.
Some of the great names of Texan
history are names which are almost
synonymous with American
independence and individuality -
Austin, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and
Houston himself, friend of the Indians,
resplendent in his Cherokee
buckskins.
"Friendship" is an appropriate motto
for a state named from the Caddo
Indian word, tejas, meaning "friend."
