In addition to eight short interludes that discuss the geography and vegetation of various regions, Guaita offers a concise and comprehensive history of the world's garden traditions, starting with the origination of designed green spaces in the Middle and Far East, soon spreading into Africa and throughout the lands of the Roman Empire. The medieval cloister garden and the Renaissance garden—which reached its peak in Italy—continue to provide precedents for landscape design. By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the French garden style—grandiose and overscaled—predominated; in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Anglo-Saxon romantic gardens most influenced landscape design.
