The latest seminar in 1988 dealt with the features of growing nationalism and with the fate of small nations in world crisis. Nationalism has been one of the most important ideas in European politics in the last one hundred and fifty years. It showed its power in reshaping Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century. The political developments in great powers and the growing nationalism among smaller European nations totally changed the map of Eastern-Central Europe after the First World War. Three empires collapsed and new countries emerged from their ruins. In their society, their history and frontiers, these countries bore the fruits - both bittér and sweet - of the previous century, as well as the seeds of approaching turmoil, the Second World War. This group of articles is not a comparative study. It will, however, deepen our knowledge of European history by concentrating on the events and ideas that comprised turning points in the history of Finland and Hungary during the 19th and 20th centuries.
