From the work of more than f ífty American writers, the editors of this anthology have selected ten stories representative of the wide-ranging themes and techniques encountered in twentiethcentury American fiction. From the work of more than f ífty American writers, the editors of this anthology have selected ten stories representative of the wide-ranging themes and techniques encountered in twentiethcentury American fiction. For the reader just making his acquaintance with modern American iiterature, this anthology offers an excellent introduction; for the ínitiated it offers a number of longer short stories not commonly anthologised and often difficult to obtain. In their generál introduction the editors trace the complex literary, economic and social forces which account for the early recognition of the short story, in America, as a legitimate art form, and outiine somé of the more notable experiments which American writers have made with this highly plastic génre. In addition to the generál introduction, each story is prefaced by editorial remarks which fill in necessary biographical and historical information, suggest how the individual story relates to the author's work as a whole, and single out somé of those 'metaphoric' qualities whereby the particular, limited experience of the individual work is translated into one of far wider referential meaning. The result is the kind of anthology all too rarely encountered- one of use to student and teacher, but one certain to appeal, as well, to the tastes and interests of • the generál reader of fiction.
