Over 120 Color Photographs
Though not the largest, Ontario is the richest and most densely populated of Canada's provinces. To the north lies a vast wilderness of lake-strewn tundra and thick forest land; an area that attracted the early fur trappers, prospectors, miners, loggers and farmers. Together they created new towns, mines, smelters and pulp mills and their processed resources were sent south to supply newly emerging industries.
In contrast to the north, south Ontario has rolling countryside, apple orchards, dairy farms, fields of corn, vegetables, soy beans and tobacco. Here too are the important towns and cities and ninety percent of the population. There is the bilingual city of Ottawa, one of the coldest capitals anywhere in the world, with an annual snowfall of some 85 inches and winter temperatures reaching minus 20°F. Toronto is a provincial capital and the financial and commercial heart of Canada. Its modern skyline of high-rise buildings house hundreds of Canadian, foreign and multi-national corporations.
The country's most popular tourist attraction is also in Ontario—the awesome Niagara Falls—a gateway to the United States and a major source of electrical power for the province.
