The Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) is a multinational pro-
gram that provides the capability of three Boeing C-17
Globemaster III long-range cargo jets to its 12 member na-
tions. SAC, based in the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF)
Papa Air Base, Hungary launched its flight operations in
2009 and has ever since provided airlift capability to sup-
port EU, NATO and UN operations and national military,
peacekeeping and humanitarian relief operations wher-
ever and whenever needed by the member nations.
SAC consists of a multinational team of airlift specialists of
the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), NATO Airlift Management
Program Office (NAM PO), HDF Pápa Air Base and the
Boeing Company. This book is an introduction to SAC. It de-
scribes the team, the organizations and the people behind
this successful program. It shows you what has been
achieved in five years of flight operations, and it reflects the
pride that the people have in making it work each and every
