FRENCH
Anyone who studies this book conscientiously should be able at the end to read any növel or newspaper, to write understandable French, though it won't be faultless, and to find his way
about Francé without choosing toothpicks on the menu instead of soup, or teliing an astonished waiter that he has an enormous wife, when he really means that he is very hungry. In other words, he will know quite a lot of French and something about Francé and be in a position to get to know a great deal more about both.
Teach Yourself FRENCH
A witty foreigner once wrote a book called The English, are they Humán? to which question he gave a qualified assent. Students in this country learning French early in the present century might equaily well have entertained doubts of the humán qualities of race which, to judge from the sentences provided for translation, displayed such passionate interest in the whereabouts of a gardener's cat or of 'la plume de ma tante'. Anyone who studies this book conscientiously should be able at the end to read any növel or newspaper, to write understandable French, though it won't be faultless, and to find his way

Things have improved since those now distant days. Better manuals and textbooks, different teaching methods, holidays abroad, broadcasting for schools, language laboratories—all these and other developments have done and will continue to do much to promote the learning of foreign languages—and to the many good reasons for earning a language is now added an economic and business one. But valuable and important as recent aids to teaching undoubtedly are, there is still use for a solid foundation of grammatical knowledge. It is the purpose of Teach Yourself French to provide this. It does not demand any previous acquaintance with French. It steers a middle course between the old-fashioned fatuity and the modern slang. It contains all the essential points of grammar which are illustrated by the sentences. Vissza
