History is mainly about change and people. Change within the colonial period in Tanzania, as seen through the eyes of some of the men who brought it about, is the subject of this book. All the thirteen men whose careers are described in its pages have been innovators, modern Tanzanians whose lives have been devoted to bringing about change, and who have been convinced that the old ways must give place to new and improved patterns of life. But at the same time this is a book about ordinary people, not about heroes, and ordinary people may be less admirable than heroes, but they are much more complicated. Thus this path-breaking book at last puts more ordinary people into the Tanzanian story and begins to eliminate the stereotypes by which so much of the country's history between Kinji-kitile and Nyerere is taught.
