"^HE ancient city of Suzhou (also known as Soochow) in southeast China has a history of 2,500 years. Its climate is mild and it is situated in rich and beautiful countryside. Over the centuries, many scholars, men of letters, high officials, and rich merchants made their homes in Suzhou because it is such an agreeable place to live in. Since the Song Dynasty, rich people had had private gardens built in and around their dwellings.
Though small in scale, Suzhou gardens create an impression of natural scenery with art and skill through their man-made ponds and rocky hills and the choice of trees and flowers. They are even more like nature than nature itself, and are full of the atmosphere of Chinese poetry and painting. Theirs is an art of the miniature.
Elegant and exquisitely built halls, pavilions and terraces are set in a manner that is convincingly natural, forming an integrated whole with the rest of the garden to be lived in and enjoyed.

Seven Suzhou gardens — the Green Wave Pavilion, the Lion Grove, the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden, the West Garden, the Fisherman's Garden and the Garden of Ease — are included in this album of colour photographs to represent nearly a thousand years of Chinese garden building in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Today these beautiful ancient gardens draw visitors from both home and abroad, and Suzhou is justly famous as a "Garden City".
