This first collection of stories by Susan Sontag is a literary event. The eight stories were written over more than a decade and each is stamped with Sontag's unpredictable intelligence and wit. The stories could be characterised as "debriefings" of women and men suffering the ordeals and dilemmas of consciousness. As one of her characters says: "We know more than we can use. Debriefing encounters life at the end of its tether in Manhattan, while Baby, as lively as a Nichols and May revue sketch, reveals the obsession of some disturbed parents about their ageing 'Baby'. In the following story we have a new variant of the Jekyll and Hyde theme and the collection closes as it began with a journey, one that describes reactions to tourist haunts; the beauties, the blemishes, the decay, the nostalgia, the bliss, the guidebook facts, the casual romance, the cost of it all.
It is a coruscating collection: a splendid display of fireworks by one of the most imaginative and original writers of our time.
