SURVIVAL IN OUR O'WN LAND presents history in 'South Australia' for the first time from the point of view of Nungas, as many 'Aborigines' call themselves, shov/ing Goonyas, as Europeans are called, as the invaders.
Almost 150 Nungas have told how the Goonya invasion and the implementation of Goonya law and policy have affected us. Fifty years ago for 'South Australia's' centenary we were a chapter in a Goonya book. Now we are our owti book.
The stories, in prose and poetry, speak volumes of much that has been previously omitted from history and textbooks. Many have been told for the first time for this book. Extracts from Goonya archival documents, many never before published, have also been included to illustrate Goonya attitudes and actions which have caused the deaths of many of our people and the destruction of much of our culture.
Christobel Mattingley was appointed by the South Australian Jubilee 150 'Aboriginal' Executive Committee as editor/researcher of this book. She is a well loved Australian writer for young people, who from childhood has felt a deep affinity for Nunga people and known that she walks on their land. She has visited many commundties in the course of extensive lecture tours throughout Australia. By profession a librarian and experienced in research, she has contacted and consulted widely in compiling this book.
Ken Hampton, a foundation member of the Jubilee 150 'Aboriginal' Executive Committee, volunteered as co-editor. Institutionalized at the age of three, he spent much of his working Ufe helping his people, first through tlie department of'Aboriginal' Afiairs and then as Lay Chaplain to the Archbishop of Adelaide. He was the first ordained Nunga in the Anglican Church in South Australia, and held in high regard and affection by Nungas and Goonyas alike throughout the State and beyond. His collaboration ensured the complete authenticity of SURVIVAL IN OUR OWN LAND. Sadly he did not Uve to see the book published.
